EVERYONE AT THE RALLY AGAINST CO2, IN KAVALA ON DECEMBER 11

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE COORDINATING COMMITTEE OF THASOS ORGANIZATIONS AGAINST CO2 STORAGE IN PRINOS

At the initiative of the Mayor, a meeting was held between representatives of organizations and groups on the island to organize a mass rally in Kavala to stop the planned CO2 storage project in Prinos. Thursday, December 11, was set as the day for the Pan-Thassian “landing” of the Thasians in the capital of the prefecture, led by the Municipality of Thasos. A fruitful dialogue developed in a spirit of unity, inspired by the determination of all participants to “run” for the proper organization and success of the rally. Responsibilities and tasks were assigned to spread the message of the struggle both inside and outside the island by any means necessary. The essential contribution to our struggle of a Pan-Hassian “uprising” was emphasized, which will give meaning to the universal opposition of the society of our island and the wider region to the imminent deadly threat, at a time when the municipality’s legal and scientific team is filing appeals for the cancellation and suspension of the project with the Council of State. At the same time, we are awaiting approval for our problem to be heard in the European Parliament, following a request submitted by the Thasos Coordinating Committee to the Committee on Petitions.
Our place is in big trouble. Its character will be totally changed by storing carbon dioxide in its foundations. The image of our beautiful island tomorrow will only exist as a memory. There will be no turning back. The Coordinating Committee of Organizations calls on all citizens to assume their share of the historical responsibility that falls to each of us. We owe it to our children.
Let us spread the message of this just struggle everywhere and, with the active participation of all of us, guarantee a magnificent rally to make Greece and Europe listen.   Let us defuse the time bomb that environmentally destructive interests want to plant without our knowledge.

The Thasos Coordination Committee has emerged as a key and decisive factor in the institutional and social struggle against the planned installation of carbon dioxide storage projects. With consistency and a high level of documentation, the Coordinating Committee has become an important body for coordinating and expressing collective objections, contributing substantially to the formation of a strong and clear framework of resistance. The Thasos Coordination Committee has established itself in the minds of the residents of Thasos and the wider region as a recognizable and reliable “trademark” of the struggle against CCS. Its name and identity have been consistently associated with consistency, responsibility, and a high level of documentation. This makes it necessary to protect the group’s identity, as there are increasingly frequent attempts by third parties to appropriate its name. Of course, in recent weeks, with the help of other groups, we have carved out a pan-Asian line of unity for the movement.
Here is a brief overview of our actions!
