Protest resolution against the construction of a carbon dioxide storage facility in Prinos on Thasos

The Board of PO EMYDAS supports the corresponding resolution of EMYDAS Eastern Macedonia for the construction of a carbon dioxide storage facility in Prinos by the company Energean with a capacity of 1 million tons per year.

The community of Thasos, the local population and environmental organizations have expressed their strong concern about the possible consequences of such a project and have spoken out against the investment, as it is a project that can lead to a large-scale industrial accident. Furthermore:

  1. The tightness of the bearing is not guaranteed.
  2. The region is at risk of earthquakes, as the last few days have clearly shown.
  3. No one can guarantee how the storage space will react to the injection of CO2.
  4. Not all safety precautions for operation and possible accidents have been taken.
  5. Accident at sea: The escaping CO2 would acidify the water, with unforeseeable consequences for the marine environment and, of course, for fishing.
  6. An accident in the air means that the CO2 cloud can have fatal consequences.
  7. Proper separation of CO is not guaranteed
  8. Many similar projects have been abandoned due to unforeseen costs during their implementation, but after they had already caused environmental damage. There are no clear guarantees that the contractors will continue the project after the pollutants have been transported.

The mayor of Thasos, Lefteris Kyriakidis, has rightly pointed out that the residents of the island do not want this project as it will affect tourism, fishing and the environment of Thasos.

Moreover, this is not a development project, as it is presented, but a project for the transfer and disposal of industrial waste that will turn the region into a European landfill. If the method of carbon dioxide storage is considered safe, then the pollutants should be stored by the polluters. For all the above reasons, we join EMYDAS Eastern Macedonia in expressing our full support for the Thassos society.
