Comments on the opinion of the Department of Environment and Water Economy of the Regional Unit of Kavala to the Regional Council of the Region
AMTH (P.A.M.TH. 19.03.2025, No. Prot. 17561/245).
Mr Vassiliadis commenting on the opinion (OPINION-GIA-MPE_-PRINOS-CO2_1.pdf ) of the Department of Environment and Hydroeconomics of the Regional Unit of Kavala to the Regional Council of the Region of AMTH observes with clarity and scientific accuracy that the opinion is based mainly on the results of the EIA and overlooks serious risks of storage.
The opinion does not transparently document how to ensure that carbon dioxide will not escape in the future – either because of geological failures or because of old wells already in the area. The possibility of earthquakes (induced seismicity) is alsosignificantly underestimated . The probability of seismic events caused by CO₂ injection is downgraded, without serious quantitative assessment. This fact and the common finding that the region is a tectonically active area means that the accident risks are multiplied. The absence of a risk analysis for the maritime zone is also evident. The potential CO₂ leakage would have a direct impact on the marine environment and fisheries. But these impacts are not taken into account in the opinion either. More details in the text below….
