PRESS RELEASE
The Coordinating Committee of Thassos stakeholders, with the participation of the Municipality of Thassos and the support of the initiatives of Kavala and Nestos against the CO2 storage in Prinos, organized on Saturday 17 May, a protest movement through the sailing of boats from Prinos to the mining platforms. Weather permitting, a protest meeting and open press conference was finally held at the port of Prinos Thassos, in the presence of a large number of people and few media.
The speeches were opened by the member of the steering committee, Charalambos Papakyriacou, and the discussion was moderated by Elias Ioannidis, former MP. The Mayor of Thassos Eleftherios Kyriakidis, the civil engineering professor of the Democritus University of Thrace Lazaros Vassiliadis, Pericles Aberiadis and Lambros Sakelariou, an economics and IT engineer, spoke.
Everyone stressed the absolute opposition to the creation of the project, our inalienable right to defend and enjoy life, in an uncontaminated and safe environment, in the place where we were born and will bequeath to future generations. The need was stressed not to be forced to live on a slow-burning bomb, under a state of fear and insecurity throughout the centuries.
We call on all the citizens of the country not to allow Greece to become a “crab” of Europe. Although Thassos is far from the decision-making centres, it is still part of this country. Finally, we inform about the continuation of the mobilizations in every direction until we are vindicated.
