A REPLY TO THE ANNEX OF THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION A-M ON THE FAVOURABLE OPINION ON STORAGE CO2 IN THE VORONOI DEPOSIT.
Gentlemen of T.E.E. A.M.
We did not need your diligent effort to show us around the “idyllic” site of the Impact Study of the Energean with your resolution. This was done zealously by paid company executives in Kalogeriko and with your coordination through your president in the role of Pontius Pilate. From you we expected you to meet with the entrenched sentiment of the society of Thassos, the Bay of Kavala region and the Region that oppose the project because the reading of the data leads to the conclusion that our region is being led into a grim permanent ordeal for EVER.
Curiously, your selective reading has not allowed you to express even the slightest reservation about the risks posed by the fact that this installation is being carried out within a stone’s throw of densely populated areas, with no other precedent in the world. You have carefully overlooked the fact that the seismicity of the area over the centuries increases the possibility of the unpredictability of gas escaping after an earthquake, with potentially dire consequences for the safety of the inhabitants. You have defied the fact that the development of polluting industrial facilities for the transport and storage of gas, with trucks and pipelines plying our seas next to beaches with bathing tourists, portend dire consequences for the environment and for the tourist industry from which residents earn their incomes. You have closed your eyes to the falsification of the spatially established character of our island as an excellent tourist destination. You did not think in terms of public interest either, since the annual contribution of the tourist product of our region to the national economy is incomparably greater than the humiliating amount of 65000 € that the Energean gave to the state e.g. in 2023 from the exploitation of the Prino deposit.
Finally, you settled for the wishful thinking and promises of the Company’s M.P.E., making the ignorant believe that “…the road to hell is paved with good intentions…”
We have absolutely no respect for your “scholarship”, we return your resolutions as insulting to the society of our island and the wider region.
We, residents and bodies of the island with the Municipality in front will continue with determination until the final vindication of our struggle against the planned “plunder” of modern “pirates” who have put our place in the mark, in our absence.
We owe it to ourselves, to our children, to our children’s children…
