PRESS RELEASE OF THE THASOS COORDINATING BODY
The Coordinating Committee of the stakeholders of Thassos was born out of the need to express the universal opposition of its inhabitants to the attempted storage of industrialCO2 pollutants from South-Eastern European countries in the depleted oil field of Prinos. It has placed at its forefront the emergence of the power that our island’s society hides within itself, through collective and unifying processes of awakening and informing about the dangers of the implementation of this “dirty” project in our backyard.
In this context, the Coordination of Bodies launches a series of informative events and contacts with the residents of the island around this huge challenge, in the belief that an informed citizen is the safest foundation of any social claim.
The beginning was yesterday evening from Limenaria, at the “Coffee-bar Alexandros”, with the excellent scientist, citizen and lover of our island, Mr. Lambros Sakellariou, who with a documented, holistic presentation illuminated many aspects of the project in question. The interest and concerns of the attendees were great, underlined by the statements and questions that followed. In the dialogue, many interesting proposals were made concerning the people’s readiness to fight, the extroversion of our problem outside the borders of the island and the effective defence of our just and universal demands through the legal process on the part of the Municipality. At the same time at the gathering area there was a book where citizens were signing against the storage of exhaust gases in the bowels of our island, with about 6000 signatures collected by the communities so far.
At the conclusion of the event, the mood of the people was widespread for organization and participation in dynamic militant mobilizations such as the protest with boats at the marine pumping platform off Prinos and others on land, Kavala, Nea Karvali, etc.
The baton of the informative excursion to the people of the island is taken by its capital, Limenas, with an event at “Kalogeriko” at 8pm on 30/04/25 and Prinos with an open meeting at the Community Square on 07/05/25 at 8pm.
The Coordinating Committee will be consistent in timely information about any action planned together with the people, on the way to the vindication of the struggle of the Thasitikos people, the wider region of the Bay of Kavala and our region in general.
Every day we are sending out our resounding message to the Region, Athens and Brussels: OUR GIFTED LAND, ITS INHABITANTS, ITS PRODUCTIVE FOOTPRINT, WITH TOURISM AT THE FOREFRONT, WILL NOT BECOME THE MODERN “IPHIGENES”, A SACRIFICE ON THE ALTAR OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC ECONOMIC INTERESTS.
